ISRO flagged off the shipment of Indias largest liquid Hydrogen storage tank
25 May 2019 Current Affairs: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Secretary, DOS & Chairman, Dr.K Sivan, flagged off the shipment of India’s largest liquid Hydrogen storage tank at VRV Asia Pacific production plant at Sri City in Chittoor district.
The event stands out as a typical example for ISRO-Industry cooperation for realizing import substitutes indigenously.
Paytm Payments Bank turns profitable in 2nd year with 19cr profit
Paytm Payments Bank announced it has turned profitable within its second year of operations, posting a ₹19-crore profit for the financial year 2018-19. It had reported a ₹20.7-crore loss for the financial year 2017-18. Paytm Payments Bank formally began operations in 2017 and claims to have over 19% of mobile banking transactions’ market share as of March 2019.
NGT directed NHAI to furnish fresh details on green cover
25 May 2019 Current Affairs: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that around 1 crore trees have been planted across the country along highways in the past three years to maintain ecology and environmental balance.
India’s crude oil imports jump 14% in April to 6-month high
25 May 2019 Current Affairs: India’s crude oil imports jumped 14% year-on-year in April to 19.72 million tonnes, the highest since October 2018. Oil imports from Iran had fallen 57% year-on-year in April after waiver from US sanctions on Iran ended recently.
The government had earlier this month it will decide on Iranian oil imports post elections. Diesel imports also surged to about 250,000 tonnes, the highest since July 2017.
While monthly liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports fell more than 10%, but on a year-on-year basis they are up about 45%.
The country’s demand for LPG had risen to a record in the fiscal year ended in March amid government measures to provide cleaner cooking fuel to rural households, and analysts expect consumption to keep rising. The Total imports of refined product decreased marginally, down by about 0.7% from a year earlier.
SCO Meeting Of Council Of Foreign Ministers Held In Bishkek
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj represented India in the meeting of Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation to be held in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic. During the meet, she discussed several pressing issues including the threat of terrorism are expected to be discussed. Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi also attended the meeting
Reliance Capital to sell its stake in mutual funds biz for Rs 6,000 crore
Anil Ambani’s Reliance Capital will exit mutual fund business by selling its stake in Reliance Nippon Life Asset Management to Japanese partner Nippon Life Insurance. Reliance Capital will sell 32.12% stake to Nippon Life for ₹4,520 crore, taking the latter’s shareholding to 75%. It will offer its remaining 10.76% stake to other investors for ₹1,480 crore. Reliance Nippon is the fifth largest asset management company in the country, managing assets worth Rs 2.33 lakh crore.
FIFA drops plans to expand Qatar World cup 2022 to 48 teams
25 May 2019 Current Affairs: FIFA has dropped the plan to include a total of 48 teams at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The 2022 edition will remain as originally planned with 32 teams. The expansion proposal was proposed and pressed by FIFA’s president, Gianni Infantino.
In January 2017, FIFA voted unanimously in favour of increasing the World Cup to 48 teams for the 2026 event – which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
German payments company Wirecard teams up with India to issue PAN cards
25 May 2019 Current Affairs: German payments company Wirecard would work with India to simplify the process of issuing tax identity cards required to open bank accounts, transfer money or complete business transactions.
The deal, with state company UTI Infrastructure Technology and Financial Services, seeks to widen the distribution of so-called PAN cards in India of 1.3 billion where most people still live and work in the informal economy.
Wirecard, which is already present in India, with its network of 15,000 retail agents in 350 cities would help collect and scan in the documents that people need to apply for a PAN card.
British PM Theresa May Announces Resignation
British Prime Minister Theresa May announces resignation from her post. She will resign on 7 June. Her announcement triggers the start of a contest to replace her as Conservative leader and Prime Minister.
Pakistan successfully testfired Shaheen-II
Pakistan has successfully test-fired a land-based ballistic missile named ‘Shaheen-II’ on 21st May 2019. The impact point of the missile was in the Arabian Sea. Shaheen-II is an intermediate-range nuclear-capable ballistic missile which could 2,000 km (1,250 miles). The test was conducted to ensure operational readiness of the Pakistan Army’s Strategic Forces Command.
Google faces indexing issues, displays old Search results
Google experienced some indexing issues which led to a few users seeing old links on Search results. Google didn’t reveal the cause of the issue but it has been resolved. Notably, Google had faced similar indexing issues twice in April, once for Search and the other time for News.
