PM Modi to attend G-20 summit in Japan from June 27-29

23 June 2019 Current Affairs: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the G-20 summit in Osaka, Japan from June 27-29, the Ministry of External Affairs.

He would be participating in the summit. He would hold bilateral (discussions) and participate in plurilateral meetings which would be announced closer to the date.

The G-20 members are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the UK and the US. Collectively, the G-20 economies account for nearly 90 per cent of the gross world product,

Around 80 per cent of world trade, two-thirds of the world population, and approximately half of the world land area.

RBI panel on MSMEs suggested Rs 20 lakh collateral-free loan under Mudra Scheme

23 June 2019 Current Affairs: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) expert committee on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) headed by the former Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Chairman U K Sinha, has recommended doubling the capital on collateral-free loans from the current Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh, for borrowers falling under the Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency (MUDRA), self-help groups, and MSMEs.

According to the 2006 definition, manufacturing units with investment below Rs 25 lakh were termed micro, those between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 5 crore termed small, and from Rs 5 crore to Rs 10 crore medium. For service units, the corresponding amounts were up to Rs 10 lakh for micro, Rs 10 lakh-2 crore for small, and Rs 2 crore-5 crore for medium enterprises.

Canara Bank decided to grant only three free cash deposits of up to Rs 50,000

23 June 2019 Current Affairs: Cash deposits in Canara Bank accounts of up to Rs. 50,000 are free for 3 transactions in a month, and then there will be a service charge of ₹1 per thousand, with a minimum of ₹50 and a maximum of ₹5,000-plus GST.

This will be effective from July 1. The bank, however, gives five free cash withdrawals for saving banks (SB) accounts.

However, senior citizen and Jan Dhan holders are exempt from the new levy. This move coincides with transaction charges on National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) and Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) being waived off complying with RBI guidelines from July 1.

SBI charges Rs 5 for the fifth withdrawal and Rs 50 as charges for the fourth cash deposit and thereafter.

Govt set to roll out IMEI database to help people track stolen mobile phones

The Telecom Ministry is set to roll out a Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), a database of International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) to help people track their stolen mobile phones. People can inform the Department of Telecom (DoT) on losing their phones, which will, in turn, blacklist their IMEI numbers. DoT had declared its plan to implement this project in July 2017 and a pilot was conducted in Maharashtra.


Indias first solar cruise vessel will debut in Kerala

23 June 2019 Current Affairs: India’s first solar-powered ferry in 2016, Kerala is gearing up for the launch of the country’s premier solar-powered cruise boat.

The initiative comes from the State Water Transport Department (SWTD), whose solar ferry Aditya in the Vaikom-Thavanakadavu route proved to be a success. The ₹3-crore cruise boat can carry 100 passengers is under construction at a boatyard in Aroor and comes from the stable of the builders of Aditya.

It will be rolled out in Alappuzha in December. The hybrid vessel will be powered by a motor that can source energy from solar panels, battery, and generator. Its battery will have 80 KWh (kilowatt hour) power backup, as compared to 50 KWh backup in Aditya.

Centre holds pre-Budget consultations with state Finance Ministers

23 June 2019 Current Affairs: Finance Minister (FM) Nirmala Sitharaman chaired her first GST Council meeting .

Sitharaman replaced Arun Jaitley as new FM under the Modi 2.0 government The Speculations were rife that the Council in its 35th meeting under the new FM would consider slashing Goods and Service Tax (GST) on electric vehicles to 5 per cent from 12 per cent.

The Council did not reduce the tax rate matter would be forwarded to the fitment committee for further consideration. The topics that were discussed during the GST Council meeting were tax evasion issue, extension of the tenure of the National Anti-profiteering Authority, electronic invoices system.

The revenue position of states, the new return filing system, setting up an appellate tribunal for north-eastern states and another one for all Union Territories.

Women’s cricket nominated for inclusion at 2022 Commonwealth Games

Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) nominated the inclusion of women’s cricket in the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which is scheduled to be held in Birmingham, United Kingdom. International Cricket Council (ICC) in partnership with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) presented the compelling case for women’s cricket to become part of the Commonwealth Games programme. Beach Volleyball and para table tennis were also nominated for inclusion in the 2022 edition.


Govt plans to raise income tax limit to Rs 3 lakh, hike 80C deduction limit

22 June 2019 Current Affairs: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman may increase the personal income tax exemption limit to Rs 3 lakh of the annual income from the existing Rs 2.5 lakh for salaried class in the upcoming Budget 2019-20.

At present, income up to Rs 2.5 lakh is exempt from personal income tax. However, income between Rs 2.5 to 5 lakh attracts 5 per cent tax plus 4 per cent cess, while that between Rs 5 to 10 lakh is levied with 20 per cent tax plus Rs 12,500 plus four per cent cess. Income above Rs 10 lakh is taxed at 30 per cent.

Government is also planning to increase the tax exemption limit for savings and investments made under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act. Currently, the ceiling is Rs 1.5 lakh. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is due to present the budget in Lok Sabha on July 5.

IndusInd Bank to merge with Bharat Financial Inclusion on July 4

Private sector lender IndusInd Bank and Bharat Financial Inclusion Ltd (BFIL) announced their merger which will be effective from July 4. The National Company Law Tribunal on June 10, 2019 approved the Scheme of Arrangement among BFIL, IndusInd Bank and Induslnd Financial Inclusion and their respective shareholders and creditors. BFIL’s current CEO MR Rao will take charge as CEO of IndusInd Financial Inclusion, which will house the Business Correspondent undertaking of BFIL.

CCI approves Indiabulls Housing Finance and Lakshmi Vilas Bank merger

22 June 2019 Current Affairs: Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved the merger of the Indiabulls Housing Finance and Lakshmi Vilas Bank.

Lakshmi Vilas Bank is going to merge with Indiabulls Housing Finance. A share swap deal with intent to create a combined entity with a larger capital base and wider geographical reach.

After the merger, Indiabulls Housing Finance will get access to low cost deposits A geographical diversification and expanded client base and cross selling opportunities.
