SEBI announces reward of Rs 1 crore to insider trading informants

22 August 2019 Current Affairs: The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) announced a new mechanism to reward informants with up to Rs 1 crore cash through a specially created hotline SEBI’s board approved a detailed set of rules for the new ‘Informant Mechanism’ under its Prohibition of Insider Trading (PIT) Regulations. The benefits available to individuals and corporates, and professionals like auditors will not be able to use this route as they are duty-bound to report any wrongdoing.

Housing for All will be achieved 2 years in advance by 2020

22 August 2019 Current Affairs: Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri planned to achieve its target of providing ‘Housing for all’ under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) .The deadline for this in two years before the deadline by 2020. He made this announcement during the 15th National Real Estate Development Council’s (NAREDCO) convention in New Delhi.A total of  48 lakh houses are currently constructed, Around 24 lakh houses have been sanctioned over to beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) till date & it will be increased to 50 lakh.The central government decided to build 1.12 crore houses by 2022 .

Around 84 lakh houses have been sanctioned to date & the remaining will be sanctioned by the end of 2019.

As per the estimation, about 600 million people would be residing in cities by 2030, the year in which India is expected to meet the sustainable development goals set by the UN (United Nations).

Dr.Ajay Kumar is appointed as Defence Secretary in the Ministry of Defence

22 August 2019 Current Affairs: Dr.Ajay Kumar has been appointed as Defence Secretary in the Ministry of Defence. The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). Dr. Kumar will replace Shri Sanjay Mitra as his tenure ends on 23 August.

Mr. Mitra is a 1982-batch IAS officer of West Bengal cadre. He is currently serving as the Secretary, Department of Defence Production.

Rajiv Gauba is appointed as the next Cabinet Secretary

The Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba is appointed as the next Cabinet Secretary for a tenure of two years. His appointment as Cabinet secretary was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). Gauba is a 1982-batch IAS officer of the Jharkhand cadre. He initially joined as the Officer on Special Duty in the Cabinet Secretariat. He will now replace the incumbent P K Sinha, who is a 1977 batch IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre.

 

Nepal to hold SAARC Foreign Ministers informal meeting

21 August 2019 Current Affairs: Nepal plans to hold SAARC Foreign Ministers informal meeting on the sidelines of the 74th UN General Assembly (UNGA) session in September 2019. The aim is to prove the country’s role in creating an environment for the commencement of the regional summit.

India and SAARC summit: The 18th SAARC summit was held in Kathmandu, Nepal in 2014. India is the largest member of SAARC forum. The 19th SAARC summit was supposed to held in 2016. But the summit was canceled after India boycotted the meeting. India protested after the terror attack at the military base in Uri in Jammu and Kashmir on September 2016. The attack killed 19 soldiers. After India boycotted the SAARC summit countries including Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan walked out. India’s decision is to set up diplomatic pressure on Pakistan. India also declared that it will participate only if Pakistan took steps to tackle terrorism.

Karnataka Government categorised Nicotine as Class A poison

21 August 2019 Current Affairs: Government of Karnataka amended the Karnataka Poisons (Possession and Sale) Rules 2015. He notified Nicotine as “Class A poison”.The main aim is to strengthen the enforcement of the ban on production and sale of electronic cigarettes. The new rules are called the Karnataka Poisons (Possession and Sale) Rules, 2019.

The ban imposed after the study conducted the High Powered Committee on Tobacco Control headed additional Chief Secretary of Karnataka, Vandita Sharma.

The Government ordered the suspension of all kinds of promotion of e-cigarettes, including online promotion.

DRDO delivered the new Mobile Metallic Ramp to Army

21 August 2019 Current Affairs: Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) delivered the design of the newly innovated Mobile Metallic Ramp (MMR) to the Indian Army at a ceremony held at DRDO Bhawan, New Delhi. The design of MMR was handed over by Secretary Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO, Dr. G Satheesh Reddy to Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS), Lt Gen Devraj Anbu.

Prasar Bharati introduce 2 awards in honor of Neelum Sharma

21 August 2019 Current Affairs: India’s largest public broadcasting agency, Prasar Bharti’s Chairman A Suryaprakash. The agency introduces 2 awards namely ‘Neelum Sharma Tejaswini award’ & ‘Achyutananda Sahoo Award’

The award memory of  Doordarshan(DD) News (Former anchor), Neelum Sharma.

Sharma.She is a strong advocate for women empowerment. She started her career in Doordarshan in 1995. She associated with the channel for over 20 years.She was known for her programmes like ‘Tejaswini’(Through this show, she focused on women achievers of India) and ‘Badi Charcha’.She was awarded the 2018 ‘Nari Shakti Puraskar’(Highest civilian award for women in India) by the President of India Ram Nath Govind.

Manmohan Singh elected to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan

21 August 2019 Current Affairs: The Former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan. He was declared elected unopposed as the deadline for the withdrawal of nominations for the by-poll ended on 19th August.

Manmohan Singh was nominated by the Congress while the BJP did not field any candidate for the by-poll and necessitated due to the death of Rajya Sabha MP Madan Lal Saini.

The election announcement was made by the Assembly Secretary Pramil Kumar Mathur. Singh filed the nomination papers on August 13. Mahesh Joshi, the government’s chief whip, received the election certificate on behalf of Singh. The former PM was unanimously and unopposedly elected.

Centre released Rs.4432.10 crore to 3 states

21 August 2019 Current Affairs: Union Minister Shri Amit Shah-led high-Level Committee (HLC) approved Rs.4432.10 crore to three States from National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). Of the fund released by the Centre, Rs.3338.22 crore will be given to Odisha for Cyclone Fani, Rs.1029.39 crore to Karnataka for drought and Rs.64.49 crore to Himachal Pradesh. This assistance is apart from the funds released by the Centre to the states under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

The Centre had released Rs.9,658 crore to all the states in 2018-19. So far in the current fiscal year, the Centre has released Rs.6,104 crore to 24 states from SDRF.

The announcement comes after the review submitted by the Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT). The HCL reviewed the Memorandum of the detailed assessment of the damage and relief operations submitted by IMCT for the allocation of additional funds.

President of India launches tree plantation drive at Rashtrapati Bhavan

21 August 2019 Current Affairs: President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind planted a sapling of Maulsari in the Rashtrapati Bhavan Estate. They launched a plantation drive as part of Van Mahotsav celebrations. The President met students and urged them to encourage fellow citizens to plant more trees and reaffirm our commitment to a greener and sustainable planet.

As part of Van Mahotsav celebrations, the President’s Secretariat, over the next few weeks, will be planting 3,252 trees and 2,962 shrubs in the President’s Estate. They include ornamental and fruit trees like Peepal, Neem, Maulsari, Champa, Gul Mohur, Mango, Chiko, Anjir and Amrud.

President’s Estate spread over 330 acres harbours a rich biodiversity. Noted trees of the Estate include, Sita Ashok, Bistendu, Shisham, Gab, Gourd Trees, Wild Almond, Lemon-Scented Gum, Doon Siris.

MHRD launched NISHTHA

22 August 2019 Current Affairs: The Ministry of Human Resource Development launched the National Initiative for School Heads and Teachers Holistic Advancements (NISHTHA). It aimed at training over 42 lakh teachers to boost education and employment focusing on reskilling the teaching workforce.

HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank launched the initiative’s website, training modules, primer booklet and mobile app built for the purpose.

The programme was launched in the presence of Smt Rina Ray, Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy and other senior officers from MHRD, all States and UTs, Senior Policy Makers and Heads of Institutions.

National sports awards 2019 were announced

22 August 2019 Current Affairs: The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has announced the awardees of the National sports awards 2019. The award recognizes the successive persons in the field of games and sports. The President of India will award the awardees at a specially organized function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. The awards will be given on the birth anniversary of hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand which is celebrated as the National Sports Day on August 29.

India holds 9th Session of India-Kenya Joint Trade Committee in New Delhi

Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Railways Shri PiyushGoyal led the Indian delegation. The delegation which is led by Peter Munya, Minister of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives, Government of the Republic of Kenya. Bilateral trade: The bilateral trade since the last session of the India-Kenya JTC held in August 2018 in Nairobi, Kenya .
