Government announced four major bank mergers
01 September 2019 Current Affairs: The government announced that the four major bank mergers. The merger of 10 public sector banks to be merged into four was announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
After the merger, there will now be 12 public sector banks after the latest round of consolidation of PSU banks. In 2017, there were 27 public sector banks. After the amalgamation, the consolidation of public sector banks will be giving the scale.
Banks to be merged: Under the scheme of amalgamation,
1) Indian Bank will be merged with Allahabad Bank. In this merger, anchor bank will be the Indian Bank
2) Punjab National Bank (PNB), Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) and United Bank will be merged and PNB will be the anchor bank
3) Union Bank of India, Andhra Bank, and Corporation Bank are to be merged and the anchor bank will be Union Bank of India
4) Canara Bank and Syndicate Bank will be merged. Canara Bank will be the anchor bank
The first merger with PNB will create a banking total business of Rs.17.9 lakh crore. After this merging, PNB entity will have 11,437 branches. In the second merger, Canara Bank will create the fourth-largest public sector lender with total business size of Rs.15.2 lakh crore and 9,609 branches.
Centre to set up 12,500 Ayush centres across India
01 September 2019 Current Affairs: The Central government has set a target of setting up 12,500 Ayush centres across India. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Yoga Award Ceremony held in New Delhi. He also said that the Centre will open 1.5 lakh health, wellness centres. The prime minister also pitched for linking technology with tradition in the practise of Ayush medicine.
PK Sinha is appointed as OSD in Prime Ministers Office
01 September 2019 Current Affairs: Former cabinet Secretary PK Sinha has been appointed as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). He will replace Nripendra Misra who is the Principal Secretary of PMO. Sinha’s place will be taken by Rajiv Gauba who was appointed as Cabinet Secretary.
Union Cabinet approves 100% FDI in coal mining and contract manufacturing
01 September 2019 Current Affairs: The Union Cabinet relaxed FDI rule for foreign single-brand retailers and also permitted foreign investment in contract manufacturing and coal mining. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal 100 percent foreign direct investment (FDI) under automatic route in coal mining and associated infrastructure approved. The main aim is to boost domestic manufacturing, 100 percent FDI in contract manufacturing under automatic route has been allowed. The cabinet has expanded the definition of mandatory 30 per cent domestic sourcing norm. It also allowed single brand retailers to start online sales, waiving the previous condition of setting up a mandatory brick-and-mortar store.
Union cabinet approves establishment of 75 new medical colleges
01 September 2019 Current Affairs: Union Ministers Prakash Javadekar and Piyush Goyal the government approved the establishment of 75 new medical colleges in the country. The main addition would lead to the creation of 15,700 more MBBS seats in India.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) the medical colleges would be established by 2021-22 will be attached with existing district and referral hospitals under Phase-3 of the ongoing Centrally Sponsored scheme.
The government plans to boost the availability of qualified health professionals, improve tertiary care in the government sector and utilise infrastructure of district hospitals and promote affordable medical education in the country with this push.
The minister announced that new medical colleges would be set up in under-served regions with no medical college or ones with at least 200 beds. The preference will be given to district hospitals with 300 beds.
China to start 27 new CPEC projects in Pakistan
01 September 2019 Current Affairs: China is planning to launch 27 new projects in Pakistan below the second phase of the $60 billion China-Pakistan Economic passageway (CPEC). The bold CPEC links China’s Kashgar town in Xinjiang province with Pakistan’s Gwadar port in Balochistan through a network of roads, railways, and highways. The linguistic communication of understanding between China and Pakistan leads to CPEC.
Romania set the record for the largest win in Twenty 20 Internationals
1 September 2019 Current Affairs: Romania set the record for the largest win in Twenty20 Internationals after it defeated Turkey in the Romania Cup 2019. Romania scored 173 runs wins in the match. In the game, Sivakumar Periyalwar scored 105 off 40 deliveries.
TamilNadu signs three agreements for healthcare collaborations in UK
01 September 2019 Current Affairs: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami signed three agreements for collaboration in the healthcare sector on the first day of his UK tour. The Chief Minister is on the first leg of his three-nation tour.
The three agreements, two were Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) and one was Statement of Intent. The one MoU was signed between the government of Tamil Nadu and International Skills Development Corporation The main aim is to develop the skills of the healthcare staff in the state. The MoU was between the government of Tamil Nadu and the King’s College London. King’s College London is looking to establish a branch of the college in Tamil Nadu.
MHA Shah flags off India’s first battery-operated bus in Ahmedabad
01 September 2019 Current Affairs: The main aim is to curb pollution and make India a better place. Union Minister Amit Shah flagged off battery-operated eco-friendly buses in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad while inaugurating the country’s first automated battery charging and swapping station for e-buses there.
He participated in the tree plantation drive organised by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to mark the culmination of the civic body’s 3 month-long campaign Mission Million Tree to plant 10 lakh trees in Ahmedabad.
The campaign was launched with an aim to make Ahmedabad the greenest city of India and it will continue till this goal is achieved. Later in the day, Shah, who represents Gandhinagar Lok Sabha seat, will attend a meeting of ‘Disha’, formerly known as District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee.
Disha initiative is meant for the effective implementation of Central schemes at the local level. He probably is slated to conclude his visit after attending the 7th Convocation ceremony of the Gandhinagar based Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University.
Bihar bans 12 brands of pan masala
01 September 2019 Current Affairs: Bihar state government has banned 12 brands of pan masala containing magnesium carbonate for a period of one year. In the notice issued, it said that the manufacture, storage, distribution, transportation or sale of pan masala containing magnesium carbonate has been banned in Bihar.
Samsung India inks with Mastercard RBL Bank for mobile payments through Samsung Pay
01 September 2019 Current Affairs: American multinational financial services corporation, Mastercard, Indian private sector bank, RBL Bank and Samsung India jointly launched the Samsung Pay for RBL Bank’s Mastercard credit card customers.
The tie-up will allow the customers of RBL bank to make contactless transactions with enhanced security on their Samsung Pay-compatible smartphones efficiently. The payments can be done through any PoS (Point of Sale) machine where a card can be dipped, swiped or tapped, both in India as well as abroad without the physical presence of a card.
RBL customers can easily add their Mastercard credit cards on Samsung Pay authenticates them based on their fingerprint, iris scan or PIN (personal identification number). The successful authentication can complete their purchases by easily tapping their devices on a compatible terminal.
