PM to visit UAE and Bahrain
20 August 2019 Current Affairs: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to pay a 3-day visit to United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain. The visit aims to hold extensive talks with top leaders of the two countries on bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest.

UAE: The Ties between India and the UAE are growing lately as an annual bilateral trade of about $60 billion. The  UAE is India’s third-largest trade partner. It is also the fourth-largest exporter of crude oil to India. The UAE has a 3.3 million-strong Indian community. The UAE has announced the prestigious award to Modi for bilateral strategic ties. The award is in the name of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who is the founding father of the UAE.

Bahrain: Prime Minister Modi will hold a two-day visit in Bahrain. This visit of the PM will be the first-ever Prime Ministerial visit from India to Bahrain. He is to visit Bahrain from 23-25 August.

Centre to set up Indias first CICET

20 August 2019 Current Affairs: The Centre is planning to set up India’s first Central Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (CICET) in Gujarat. The aim is to boost the chemical industry in India.

CIPET hostel inauguration: The Minister of State for Chemical and Fertilizers Sh. Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated the other campus of the Central Institute of Plastic Engineering & Technology (CIPET) in Valsad, Gujarat. CIPET was built at the cost of Rs.54 crore for the benefit of tribal students and used for research in plastic engineering technology.

The Union minister also inaugurated the CIPET hostel built at a cost of Rs.31 crore. The hostel can accommodate 575 boys and 150 girls.

Indian Railways planned for 3000th stations to get 1000 Wi-Fi Spots

20 August 2019 Current Affairs: The Indian railways enabled free Wi-Fi at its 3000th station . The facility went live at Rajasthan’s Ellenabad on Monday, with 1,000 stations connected. Ellenabad railway station in Bikaner Division of North Western Railway situated north of the Ghaggar-Hakra river .It serves as a point of entry into the state of Haryana from Rajasthan.

Rajasthan’s Rana Pratap Nagar in the North Western Railway became the 2000th station to have wi-fi facility. The railways plans to provide free Wi-Fi facility at all its stations, around 6,000.

The railways’ free Wi-Fi facility at stations began from Mumbai Central in January 2016 and within 16 months it was live at 1,600 stations across India. Railway’s telecommunications arm RailTel began the process with a vision to turn stations into a platform for digital inclusion.

Chandrayaan 2 entered Moons Orbit

20 August 2019 Current Affairs: Indian’s first-ever mission aimed for a soft landing on the Moon’s south polar region, Chandrayaan-2, was inserted into Moon’s orbit on 20 August. The entry was confirmed by the Indian Space Agency, ISRO. Chandrayaan-2 was launched on July 22 and had left the Earth’s orbit on August 14. Before reaching the final orbit, the spacecraft will now undergo four-orbit manoeuvres about 100 km from the lunar surface.

Chandrayaan-2 was precisely inserted in the defined orbit. Following its entry in the lunar orbit, there will be four more orbit manoeuvres to make the spacecraft enter its final orbit passing over the lunar poles at a distance of about 100 km from the moon’s surface.


State Bank of India aims to eliminate debit cards

20 August 2019 Current Affairs: State Bank of India bank debit cards from the banking system as the bank plans to promote more digital payment solutions and eliminate the plastic cards.

The debit cards by customers of SBI which services a fifth of the population. Around 90 crore debit cards in the country as against 3 crore credit cards, and pointed out to digital solutions like its own ‘Yono’ platform as the key for achieving a debit card-less country.

Kumar said through the Yono platform, one can withdraw cash at automated teller machines or pay for purchases at a merchant establishment without having a card at all.

The bank already set up 68,000 ‘Yono cashpoints’ and is in the process of scaling it up massively to over 1 million in the next 18 months.which will make the necessity to have a card even less.

Sadbhavana Diwas observed on 20 August

Sadbhavana Diwas is celebrated on 20 August every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. This year will be the 75th Birth Anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi. India to train Maldivian civil services officers training

The India-Maldives MoU on Training and Capacity Building Programme for  Maldivian civil services officers training has been made operationalized in the ceremony held at the Civil Services Commission of Maldives at Male. The training will take place in three phases upon the agreement between the two countries. The first 3 training programs will be held in September and November for 60 officers and in December for 30 officers of top management level.

Pradhan Mantri Laghu Vyapari Maan Dhan scheme launched

19 August 2019 Current Affairs: The NDA-led government in its second term is to launch Pradhan Mantri Laghu Vyapari Maan-Dhan scheme on 19 August. The pension scheme for small traders functions under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. The proposal for the scheme was approved by the cabinet on May 31, 2019. The scheme was notified by the Ministry on July 22.

Hima and Anas won gold in the Athleticky Mitink Reiter 2019

19 August 2019 Current Affairs: Indian sprinters Hima Das and Mohammad Anas won gold at the Athleticky Mitink Reiter event in the Czech Republic. They won gold in the women’s and men’s 300m category respectively. India’s Nirmal Tom clinched bronze in men’s 300m category.

Muhammed Anas clocked 32.41 seconds to claim gold in the event. India’s Nirmal Tom clocked 33.03 seconds.


India to host World Youth Chess Championship

For the first time ever, India is to host the World Youth Chess Championship 2019. The All India Chess Federation (AICF) won the bid to conduct the World Youth and Junior Chess championships 2019 in the country. The championship will be held from 1 October to 13 October 2019 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The championship aims to produce many young stars and aspire to take part in such world events.

Manipur Govt launches School Fagadaba scheme

Chief Minister (CM) of Manipur, N Biren Singh launched “School Fagadaba” (Make education better) scheme. The main aim of the scheme is to improve the infrastructure, quality education and overall improvement of government schools.The regular attendance of teachers, biometric devices would be installed in every Government school in the state.The teachers posted in these schools stay at the place of their posting for at least 3 years.

Lucknows iconic Hazratganj Chauraha renamed as Atal Chowk

19 August 2019 Current Affairs: Lucknow’s famous Hazratganj Chauraha renamed as “Atal Chowk” It is named in the memory of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The first death anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Hazratganj Chowk renamed after him as “Atal Chowk” from August 16.

He was a five-time Member of Parliament (MP) from Lucknow. A memorial named “Atal Smriti Upvan” be built on his name. The Mayor of the city prepared a draft for developing a memorial for Atal Smriti Upvan.

They planned to place statue along with his 51 poems, speeches and other memorabilia. Chhattisgarh government announced to rename Naya Raipur as Atal Nagar. Jharkhand government renamed several places and colleges after Vajpayee’s name.

India contributes $1 million to UN fund

18 August 2019 Current Affairs: India contributed $1 million to the UN Special Purpose Trust Fund for the Resident Coordinator System.

The Special Purpose Trust Fund (SPTF) is a specific fund housed within the UN Secretariat established to receive, consolidate, manage and account for all contributions and financial transactions of the new Resident Coordinator system in a transparent and effective way.

PM signs 10 MoUs during his second visit to Bhutan
