Union Cabinet extends 15th Finance Commission’s term up to Nov 30

18 July 2019 Current Affairs: The union cabinet approved the extension of the term of Fifteenth Finance Commission up to 30th November this year. This enables the commission to examine various comparable estimates for financial projections.

The reforms and the new realities to finalise its recommendations for the period 2020-2025. The proper amendment to enable the Fifteenth Finance Commission to address serious concerns regarding the allocation of adequate, secure and non-lapsable funds. The Terms of Reference plans to ensure an assured allocation of resources towards defence and internal security imperatives.

First-ever Himalayan States Conclave to be hosted by Uttarakha nd on July 28, 019

17 July 2019 Current Affairs: First-ever Himalayan States Conclave hosted by Uttarakhand on July 28, 2019 The main focus on sustainable development of the Indian Himalayan Region.

It will be held at Mussoorie. The event will discuss the common issues pertaining to states located in the Himalayan Region The main reasons are environmental protection, Himalayan culture and economic development.

The administrators, specialists, the conclave host the Chief Ministers of the Himalayan states Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram and Nagaland.

Rajiv Kumar, Vice President of Niti (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog, will also be a part of the conclave. The key points adopted at the Himalayan conclave will be presented as a draft to the Niti Aayog. 

Google India’s ‘Internet Saathi’ programme to empower rural women

17 July 2019 Current Affairs: Google India’s ‘Internet Saathi’ programme aimed to empower rural women to use the Internet.

They added two more states namely Punjab and Odisha. The programme reached 2.6 lakh villages in 20 states. A pilot project in 2015 along with Tata Trusts, ‘Internet Saathi’ programme The main focus is on on educating women on how to use the Internet.

These women impart training to other women in their community and neighbouring villages. In the four-year journey, trained 70,000 “Internet Saathis” are using the Internet to drive positive change in their communities already benefited over 2.6 crore fellow women.

There are also those who are driving awareness for issues like girl child education, menstrual hygiene and more. In Punjab, the programme covers around 5,000 villages. In Odisha, it will cover over 16,000 villages.

Anish Bhanwala won the gold medal in the 25m rapid fire pistol competition in the ISSF Junior World Cup 2019 in Suhl, Germany. Bhanwala secured 584 and shot 29 in the final. He defeated Egor Ismakov. Russian Egor Ismakov won the silver medal with 23, while Germany’s Florian Peter bagged bronze with 19. India have so far won eight gold, seven silver and three bronze medals. Adarsh Singh and Agneya Kaushik came fourth and sixth respectively.

International Court of Arbitration has imposed a penalty of over $5 billion on Pakistan

Justice AK Sikri appointed as the Judge of SICC

The Republic of Singapore Halimah Yacob appointed Justice AK Sikri as judge of the Supreme Court He served as an international judge of the Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC)  He was effect from August 1, 2019.  His term will expire on January 4, 2021.  SICC has 16 international judges. He retired on March 6, 2019. He served as Chief Justice of the Punjab & Haryana High Court, and Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

Biswa Bhusan Harichandan is appointed as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh on july 15. Bhusan will take over from ESL Narasimhan, who has served as Governor for Andhra Pradesh since December 2009.   BB Harichandran: He is one of the leaders of the BJP in Odisha. A practising lawyer before coming into politics. Bhusan joined the Bharatiya Jana Sangha in 1971 and became its National Executive Member and its State General Secretary till the formation of Janata Party in 1977.

SIDBI introduced web-based application system for contribution from FFS

18 July 2019 Current Affairs: Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) introduced a web-based application system for contribution from the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS).

The applications from various Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) accepted online and the status of the same shall be accessible to applicants.

18 July 2019 Current Affairs: Indian team secured the first spot in the medal tally of Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship 2019 held at Samoa, a country in Oceania.

37 Indian players participated in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in Apia, Samoa. It won 35 medals including 22 golds, 10 silvers and 3 bronze medals in the youth, junior, and senior categories.

India also broke a total of 22 records in all 3 age groups in World, Asian, Commonwealth and National level as well as set a new junior record at Commonwealth and National level.

Govt to increase coal production to one billion tone by 2022-23

Govt planned to increase coal production to one billion tone by 2022-23 The main aim is to increase the total production of coal in the country to one billion tone by 2022-23. The gap between demand and supply of coal cannot be bridged completely as there is insufficient domestic availability of coking coal.  The added that all India raw coal production increased its production from over 462 Metric tonnes in 2013-14 to around 730 metric tonnes in 2018-19.
