PM is on a two day state visit to Bhutan

17 August 2019 Current Affairs: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day state visit to Bhutan. The two leaders will hold talks to further deepen the bilateral ties. This is PM Modi’s second visit to Bhutan and the first since his re-election.

In his visit, PM Modi is expected to sign 10 MoUs in fields like education amongst others and inaugurate 5 projects including the Mangdechhu hydroelectric power plant and the ISRO-built earth station in Thimphu.

It should be noted that India-Bhutan partnership forms an important pillar of New Delhi’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. PM’s visit also reflects the high importance that the Government attaches to India’s relations with the Himalayan nation.

 

Centre plans to make India free of single use plastics

17 August 2019 Current Affairs: The Union Minister Prakash Javadekar announced a massive public campaign to make India free of single use plastics at the function ordered by the Indian Consulate in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Ministry conducted a series of meet with all the stakeholders including state governments gathering to eliminate the use of single-use plastic. It also suggested shopkeepers to provide eco-friendly bags to their customers.

PM announced the road map for farmer welfare

17 August 2019 Current Affairs: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the roadmap for the welfare of farmers. The NDA government, in its second term, aims to double the income of the farmers. It also aims to provide house, electricity connection, optical fibre network and broadband connectivity to every house in all the villages across the country.

Under the welfare of the farmers plan, 1.5 lakh wellness centers will be created at villages. It also aims to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers which can affect the health of soil.

Chhattisgarh state government increases reservation for SC and OBC

17 August 2019 Current Affairs: Chhattisgarh government announced an increase in the reservation for Scheduled caste (SC) from 12% to 13% and for Other Backward Classes (OBC) from 14% to 27%. This announcement was made by Chief Minister (CM) Shri Bhupesh Baghel This announcement was made on August 15 celebration at the Police parade ground in Raipur, Chattisgarh.

The state’s reservation becomes a total of 72 percent is the highest in the country The reservation limit of 50 percent mandated by the Supreme court.

Online revenue payment system launched by CM of Odisha

Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Naveen Patnaik launched online revenue payment. The main aim is to provide people with an easier way to make their land revenue payments-online on 73rd Independence Day on August 15, 2019, at Bhubaneswar. This online payment system was developed at the National Informatics Centre- Bhubaneswar, Odisha. This is an initiative of the State revenue department of Odisha under the “5-T mantra”.

Bajrang Punia to get Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2019

Bajrang Punia awarded Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2019. It is the highest country award in India. Bajrang Punia is set to be awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2019.The country’s highest sporting honour. Punia will be rewarded with the award for his consistent showing in the field of wrestling. His contribution in bringing laurels to the country. Punia along with Vinesh Phogat was recommended by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) for the prestigious award.

Fifth Meeting Of BRICS Minister Of Environment Held In Sao Paulo, Brazil

17 August 2019 Current Affairs: Fifth BRICS Minister of Environment Meeting held in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It is preceded by the 2-day meeting of BRICS Joint Working Group on Environment. The Indian delegation led by Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Prakash Javadekar.

Prakash Javadekar stated that India achieved its Nationally Determined Contributions(NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, reduction of energy intensity by 25 %, increment of forest cover by nearly 15,000 sq km , Swachh Bharat Mission initiative, Waste Management Rules. The initiatives of BRICS countries and reaffirmed India’s support to BRICS cooperation.

Ravi Shastri appointed as Head Coach of Indian Cricket Team

Former Cricketer Ravi Shashtri appointed as the head coach of Indian cricket team. His term will be for another two years. Cricket Advisory Committee is led by former Indian Cricket captain Kapil Dev  He is along with Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy conducted interviews of shortlisted candidates for Indian cricket team’s head coach. Shastri played the role of the Team Director earlier. He is currently the head coach of the Indian team.

A 12 member committee to review DPP and DPM

18 August 2019 Current Affairs: The Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh approved the setting up of a Committee under the Chairmanship of Director General (Acquisition).

Aim: The committee is aimed to review the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) 2016 and Defence Procurement Manual (DPM) 2009. The Committee will study and submit its recommendations in 6 months.

India contributes $1 million to UN fund

18 August 2019 Current Affairs: India contributed $1 million to the UN Special Purpose Trust Fund for the Resident Coordinator System.

The Special Purpose Trust Fund (SPTF) is a specific fund housed within the UN Secretariat established to receive, consolidate, manage and account for all contributions and financial transactions of the new Resident Coordinator system in a transparent and effective way.

Air India, Indias first airline to fly over north pole

Air India became India’s first Indian airline to operate commercial flights overflying the polar region. The airlines flew its Boeing 777 aircraft over the North pole. The Boeing 777 was Delhi-San Francisco flight.

New route: The flights generally take two routes to reach San Francisco from New Delhi, one over China, Japan crossing the Pacific Ocean and the other over Europe crossing the Atlantic Ocean. But the airlines changes its course and flew over zero degree north.
