India celebrates 73rd Independence Day of 15 August

India celebrates its 73rd Independence Day on 15 August, 2019. The Day is celebrated every year. On August 15, 1947, India gained its power and became an independent nation. The Day will be celebrated by colors and various events across the country. The President Ram Nath Kovind will deliver the address to the nation on the Independence Day event. The tricolour flag is hoisted by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.


Service and Gallantry Medals for 946 police personnel

15 August 2019 Current Affairs: A total of 946 police personnel have been awarded Service/Gallantry Medals on the occasion of the Independence Day, 2019. The awards were approved by the President of India.

Awardees: Among the awardees 72 are from CRPF, 61 are from J&K police, 23 are from Odisha, 9 are from Chhattisgarh and the remaining from the other States/UTs and CAPFs.

♦ President Police Medals for Gallantry (PPMG) – 3 personnel

♦ Police Medals for Gallantry (PMG) – 177 personnel

♦ President’s Police Medals for Distinguished Service – 89 personnel

♦ Police Medal for Meritorious Service -677 personnel

180 Gallantry awards: Among the 180 gallantry awards:

♦ 114 personnel – For their action in Jammu & Kashmir

♦ 62 personnel – For their left wing extremism affected areas

♦ 4 personnel – For their action in the north-east region

RBI to issue revised norms for housing finance companies

15 August 2019 Current Affairs: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) housing finance companies (HFCs) treated as a category of non-banks release a revised regulatory framework for these entities. The Finance Act, 2019 amended the National Housing Bank Act, 1987, The conferring certain powers for the regulation of HFCs with the Reserve Bank of India.HFCs be treated as one of the categories of non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) for regulatory purposes. The Reserve Bank of India will carry out a review of the extant regulatory framework applicable to HFCs and come out with revised regulations in due course.HFCs will continue to comply with the directions issued by the National Housing Bank (NHB) till the RBI issues a revised framework.The NHB continue to carry out supervision of HFCs and they will continue to submit various returns to NHB. The grievance redressal mechanism with regard to HFCs will also continue to be with the NHB.

The housing finance institution is desirous of making an application for registration under sub-section 2 of section 29A of the National Housing Bank Act, 1987.Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed an amendment to Section 45-IA of the RBI Act 1934 in the Finance Bill.The amended Act empowers the central bank to supersede the board of NBFCs (other than those owned by the government) and enable resolution of financially troubled NBFCs through a merger or splitting them into viable and non-viable units called bridge institutions. The central bank can now remove auditors, call for audit of any group company of an NBFC and have a say over the compensation of the senior management.


Indian Railways to get CORAS

16 August 2019 Current Affairs: Ministry of Railways and Commerce & Industry launched Commando for Railway Security (CORAS) of Indian Railways. It was launched by Shri Piyush Goyal. He also launched a new establishment manual for Railway Protection Force (RPF). The induction of CORAS was planned in RPF.  The Ministry also plans to install a new network of CCTV cameras at every station. It will be set up to enhance the security of Railway passengers. The CCTV links will be connected to the local stations, Government Railway Police (GRP), RPF, Divisional office and to the Minister’s office.

Jal Jeevan Mission scheme to be launched

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the government is to launch the Jal Jeevan Mission scheme. The scheme aims to bring piped water to households. The estimated cost of the project is more than Rs.3.5 lakh crore. Niti Aayog reported that nearly 600 million Indians are facing high to extreme water stress. The report said that 21 cities, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad, will run out of groundwater by 2020, affecting 100 million people.

PM announced the creation of CDS post

16 August 2019 Current Affairs: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the creation of post of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on 15 August. The rank of CDS will be a first among equals. It will be a fourth four-star officer who will be senior to the three other service chiefs. It is the most significat reform in the defence.

Aim: The creation of the post aims to make the Indian defence forces even more effective. It will also ensure the better coordination between the three defence services.

Denmarks Jyske Bank unveiled worlds first negative interest rate home loan

16 August 2019 Current Affairs: Denmark’s third-largest bank Jyske Bank launched the world’s first negative interest rate mortgage. The bank handling out loans to homeowners where the charge is minus 0.5% a year. It has begun offering borrowers a 10-year deal at -0.5%. Jyske bank borrowers will make a monthly repayment, as usual, The amount still outstanding will be reduced each month by more than the borrower.

Negative interest rates effectively mean that a bank pays a borrower to take money off their hands, so they pay back less than they have been loaned.

Another Danish bank, Nordea will begin offering 20-year fixed-rate deals at 0% and a 30-year mortgage at 0.5%.


ISRO chairman K.Sivan conferred with A.P.J. Abdul Kalam award

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman K Sivan awarded the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Award by the Tamil Nadu government.Kailasavadivoo Sivan, who led ISRO’s successful launch of Chandrayaan-2 mission receive the award in person receive it from Chief Minister K Palaniswami.

The award is given in recognition of his stellar work in promotion of science and technology.The Kalam award is to honour those who work for promoting scientific growth, humanities and students’ welfare.

Indias Largest Rural Sanitation Survey Launched

16 August 2019 Current Affairs: Jal Shakti Minister Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat launched the Swachh Survekshan Gramin 2019 (SSG 2019) The scheme instituted from August 14 to September 30, 2019.

Swachh Survekshan Gramin 2019  SSG 2019 will cover 17,450 villages in 698 districts across India. It includes 87,250 public places namely schools, Anganwadi centers, public health centers, haat/bazaars/religious places. Around 2,50,000 citizens will be interviewed for the survey. Citizens will also be mobilised to provide feedback on sanitation relation related issues online using an application developed for the purpose.The independent survey agency will conduct the survey in all districts.

MoHUA launched Swachh Nagar app

Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) launched Swachh Nagar app, a mobile application under the Swachh Survekshan 2020. Through the app, people will be able to get their household waste that can be picked up by urban municipal bodies. The move is a part of the cleanliness rankings of cities. It was inaugurated by the Union Minister of State Hardeep Singh Puri. Aim: The Swachh Survekshan 2020 has the theme “Cleanliness is Our Right”.

P.T. Usha appoints in AAAs Athletes Commission

Legendary Indian sprinter P.T. Usha, one of India’s greatest athletes. She is appointed as a member of the Asian Athletics Association’s (AAA) Athletes Commission. This is the 2nd time she is appointed as member .P.T. Usha appointed a member of the Asian Athletics Association’s Athletes Commission. She will be one of the six members of the AAA Athletes Commission, to be headed by 1992 Olympics gold medallist hammer thrower Andrey Abduvaliyev of Uzbekistan.

Aishwarya Pissay is the first Indian to claim a World Title in Motorsports

15 August 2019 Current Affairs: Aishwarya Pissay created history becoming the first Indian to claim a world title in motorsports. She is 23-year-old lifted the FIM World Cup in the women’s category after the final round of the championship in Hungary.

She led the leaderboard going into the final round of the championship after having secured podium finishes in two out of four rounds of the championship. Pissay started the Hungarian Baja with a seven point lead and managed to maintain momentum through the race, finishing the race with a tally of 65 points, four more than Portugal’s Rita Vieira in the final overall standings for women.

The rider from Bengaluru had won the first round in Dubai and was placed third in the Portugal’s leg. She also placed second in the junior category with 46 points. She is behind championship winner Tomas de Gavardo (60) of Chile. The events were conducted by the International Motorcycling Federation, the governing body for motor racing in the world.


Air India New Delhi-San Francisco flight to fly over North Pole

The Air India (AI) announced its inaugural passenger flight over the North Pole region from August 15 between New Delhi and San Francisco. The first commercial service will be operated by Captain Rajneesh Sharma and Captain Digvijay Singh It marked the “maturing of civil aviation in India as another frontier is crossed. Air India conquered this frontier in 2007.He took delivery of the brand new aircraft and flew it over the North Pole from Seattle to New Delhi.

Uttarakhand gets full member status in the BCCI by CoA

Cricket Association of Uttarakhand (CAU) granted full membership in the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India). This is done by the Committee of Administrators (CoA) on August 13, 2019. The association inducted as a member association. It is the full member with amendments that are required to be communicated by CoA. This membership grant brought an end to long-standing dispute among Uttarakhand Cricket Association(UKCA).

Assam Golden Butterfly tea variety auctioned for Rs.75,000 at GTAC

In Assam, a kilogram of Golden Butterfly tea struck gold at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) as it was sold at Rs.75,000. This is a new international record bettering the previous high of Rs.70,501 per kg. Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) said that the growing demand for speciality tea helped the ‘Golden Butterfly tea’ surpass the earlier record by Rs.4,499. The hand-crafted tea was made from tender leaves and buds available only around June-July.

Abhinandan Varthaman to be awarded Vir Chakra

Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman will be awarded the Vir Chakra gallantry medal on Independence Day. The Vir Chakra award is an Indian gallantry award for acts of  Bravery  on the battlefield. The award will recognises his grit, determination and bravery.
