Vikram Sarabhais 100th birth anniversary observed on 12 August
13 August 2019 Current Affairs: Founder of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) and Father of the Indian Space Program, Vikram Sarabhai’s 100th birth anniversary observed across the country.
He established Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad on 11 November 1947 & Indian National Committee for Space Research in 1962.
He founded the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad, Center for Environmental Planning and Technology(CEPT) and the Nehru Foundation for Development (NFD) in Ahmedabad. He also served as chairman of India’s Atomic Energy Commission.
ISRO launched the Chandrayaan-2 mission having lander called Vikram to honour the late Dr. Vikram Sarabhai that is scheduled to touch down on the lunar surface on September 7, 2019.
RBI launches regulatory sandbox for Fintech companies
14 August 2019 Current Affairs: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued the final framework for regulatory sandbox (RS) for the startups, banks and financial institutions. The Fintech companies can now set up their own RS for live testing of innovative products in areas like retail payments, digital KYC and wealth management.
Aim: The framework aims to enable innovations in the financial technology space. It will also foster responsible innovation in financial services, promote efficiency and bring benefit to consumers.
It will encourage innovations that are intended for use in the Indian market in areas where there is absence of governing regulations.
Kajin Sara lake has set a new record of being the worlds highest lake
13 August 2019 Current Affairs: Mountaineers discovered the Kajin Sara lake in Manang district of Nepal few months ago. This lake in Nepal has set a new record of being the world’s highest lake and replaced Tilicho Lake of Nepal.
Kajin Sara lake: Kajin Sara lake is situated at an altitude of 4,919 metres in the Himalayan nation. It is located at Singarkharka area of Chame rural municipality. The measurement of the lake which is located at an altitude of 5,200 metres, is estimated to be 1,500 metre (1.5 km) long and 600 metre wide. The water of the Kajin’s lake is formed out mainly by melting waters from Himalaya.
Central Government launches Swachh Nagar app
The Central Government launched a mobile application through which people will be able to get their household waste picked up by urban municipal bodies. The people have to pay to civic bodies to avail the service through Swachh Nagar app. They can track the waste-collection vehicle on the app. The main aim is to ensure the accountability of municipal corporations. According to the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry. Launching Swachh Survekshan 2020.
Centre introduces scheme for NBFCs and HFCs
14 August 2019 Current Affairs: Centre has announced a partial guarantee scheme in the budget for non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) and housing finance companies (HFCs). The scheme will allow the Public Sector Banks to purchase their assets.
Aim: The scheme is aimed to provide liquidity support to the NBFCs and HFCs. The key reason for the slowdown in the economy is the stress on NBFCs and HFCs. The stress has also caused reduced credit flow to small businesses and consumers. Now, by improving the liquidity the scheme aims to avoid the distress sale of assets in a sector facing a shortage of cash due to asset- liability mismatch.
For the implementation of the scheme, the government has planned a mechanism which will elicit information on a real-time basis.
Indian juniors won medals at the 2019 Bulgarian Junior International Championships

Bianca Andreescu won the 2019 Rogers Cup
Bianca Andreescu won the 2019 Rogers Cup in Toronto, Canada. She defeated Serena Williams.
In the Rogers Cup men’s final, Spanish player Rafael Nadal won the title. It is his fifth Rogers Cup title. He secured 6-3 and 6-0 won Daniil Medvedev. It is his 35th Masters 1,000 tournament win.
China to soon launch its own cryptocurrency
People’s Bank of China (PBoC) is issuing its own cryptocurrency. The bank’s researchers have been working last year to develop systems, and the cryptocurrency is “close to being out,” The event is held by China Finance 40 Forum over the weekend in Yichun, Heilongjiang. Mu repeated the PBoC’s intention that the digital currency would replace M0 or cash in circulation rather than M2, which would generate credit and impact monetary policy.
Centre to start special hospitals with Indian Medicines in 150 districts
13 August 2019 Current Affairs: Ministry of AYUSH plans to start Special hospitals offering Indian Systems of Medicines like Siddha and Ayurveda in 150 districts across the country. The announcement was made by Union Minister of State for AYUSH Shri Sripad Yesso Naik in the inauguration of the Ayurveda medical College in Vellore, Tamilnadu on 12 August.
Maharashtra seeks Rs.3000 crore as monetary assistance from the Centre
13 August 2019 Current Affairs: The Maharashtra government has sought Rs.3,000 crore package as assistance from the Centre before the final review of the inter-ministerial committee on disaster management on assessment of the damage caused by the flood. Earlier, Karnataka State has sought Rs.3000 crore for interim flood relief.
The State’s Relief and Rehabilitation, and Revenue department officials will asses the losses in the western Maharashtra from 70 talukas of Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Thane, Nasik, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Raigad and Sindhudurg districts. The Cabinet will review the State’s proposal.
In Maharashtra the crop destruction alone will be more than Rs.125 crore and around 27,468 hectare of agriculture land has been completely destroyed.

RPF launched Operation Number Plate
14 August 2019 Current Affairs: Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Indian Railways launched Operation “Number Plate”, a Special Drive to curb unidentified vehicles. The operation was launched under the direction of DG/RPF, Sh.Arun Kumar. All Local Police and Commercial Department of Railways showed their active interest in the operation.
MoHUA launched Swachh Survekshan 2020
14 August 2019 Current Affairs: Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) launched the Swachh Survekshan 2020 on 13th August. It is the fifth edition of the annual cleanliness survey conducted by the Ministry. The scheme was launched by Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, the Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs.
Aishwarya Pissay claims the world title in motorsports
Aishwarya Pissay claimed the world title in motorsports in the women’s category in the FIM World Cup 2019 held at Varpalota in Hungary. She created the histroy and became the first Indian to claim the title. She finished 4th in the Hungary Round. Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) claimed her success India’s first FIM World Cup champion.
State Bank of India and BoB to link home loan product to RBIs repo rate
14 August 2019 Current Affairs: Bank of Baroda (BoB) planned to linked its home loan product to RBI’s (Reserve Bank of India (RBI)repo rate after State Bank of India (SBI). With this, home loans at BOB will be available at repo rate linked interest rate starting at 8.35%The MCLR linked home loan product is available starting at 8.45%, which had come into effect on 7th August 2019 after the MCLR was reduced by 15 basis points(bps).This decision is following RBI reducing the key interest rate (repo) by 35 basis points to a nine-year low of 5.40%.Many other state-run banks, including Union Bank of India, Allahabad Bank, Bank of India and Syndicate Bank expressed their intention to launch loan products linked to an external benchmark.
