Deposits in Jan Dhan Yojana accounts crosses Rs 1 lakh crore

11 July 2019 Current Affairs: The deposits in bank accounts opened under Jan Dhan scheme crossed the Rs 1 lakh crore mark.

As per the latest finance ministry data, the total balance in over 36.06 crore Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana accounts at Rs 1,00,495.94 crores

The PMJDY launched on August 28, 2014. The main aim is to provide universal access to banking facilities to the people in the country. The scheme launched about five years ago by the Modi-government crossed the Rs 1 lakh crore mark.

The total balance in over 36.06 crore Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts was at Rs 1,00,495.94 crores. The government shifted the focus on accounts from ‘every household’ to ‘every unbanked adult’.

Oriental Bank of Commerce bank cuts MCLR rate upto 10 bps

11 July 2019 Current Affairs: Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) has reduced the marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR) by up to 10 basis points (bps) for various tenors. It is effective from 11 July 2019. MCLR for overnight has been reduced to 8.20% from 8.30% and one-month loan tenor has been reduced by 10 bps from 8.35% to 8.25%.

Similarly, MCLR has been decreased by 5 bps for:

1) three-month loan to 8.45%

2) six-month loan to 8.55%

3) one-year tenor loans to 8.65%.

Previosly, the MCLR for three-month, six-month and one-year tenor loans were at 8.50% , 8.60% and 8.70%, respectively.

BCC inks MoU with BRICS Chamber to promote trade

The Bharat Chamber of Commerce (BCC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with BRICS of Commerce and Industry for promoting trade and investments between BRICS countries and eastern part of India, in particular. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BCC was initially established in 1900 as the “Marwari Chamber of Commerce” at Calcutta. Following Indian Independence, in 1949 Chamber re-christened itself as Bharat Chamber Commerce.

Sunil Chhetri and Ashalata Devi conferred with top honours at AIFF Awards

11 July 2019 Current Affairs: Sunil Chhetri, Indian men’s football team captain named the Men’s Footballer of the year 2019 at the All India Football Federation‘s (AIFF) Awards.

He won the award for the third consecutive year. He is also the second-highest active international scorer after Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo. In women’s category, it was conferred to footballer Ashalata Devi. Some of the Award winners in the football category are AIFF Emerging Women’s Footballer of the Year – Dangmei Grace (Manipur)

Arun Kumar is appointed as the head of Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)

11 July 2019 Current Affairs: Arun Kumar is appointed as the head of aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on 9 July. He is currently the additional secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation.  His appointment was approved by the PM led-Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. Department of Personnel and Training issued the order of the appointment.

He will replace B S Bhullar, DGCA Chief. Bhullar was holding the office since 2016. Mr. Kumar is an IAS officer of 1989 batch of Haryana cadre. Mr.Arun was heading the DGCA as an additional charge between 31 May and 9 July 2019.

Saudi Arabia adopts Digital India, equality of women in Haj 2019

11 July 2019 Current Affairs: The Indian Haj mission in Saudi Arabia adopting digital technology with the Introduction of Haj App, Indian diplomats in Saudi Arabia.

Parliament adopts resolution levying 200% duty on all Pakistani goods

11 July 2019 Current Affairs: The Parliament adopted resolution slapping  200 percent duty on all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan.

Already decision was taken on feb 16  after Pulwama terror attack .

The two statutory resolutions were moved by Anurag Thakur, Minister of State (M/S) for Finance on behalf of Union Minister of Finance Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman adopted their voice.


RBI formed panel to review timings of different financial markets

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has formed an internal committee to review timings of different financial markets. It change the timing of the functioning of the foreign exchange market from 9 am to 9 pm. Currently, the currency market works from 9 am to 5 pm. The move is after RBI’s consideration to gauge demand and potential benefits. RBI also said that if there is lack of demand from participants, the current market timings for government security markets may be retained.

Dutee Chand bags Gold medal in 100-metres event at World Universiade

India’s Dutee Chand clinched a Gold medal in the 100-metre dash The event at the World Universiade at Napoli in Italy.  She is a 23-year-old sprinter clocked 11.32 seconds race from start to finish.  Del Ponte of Switzerland won the Silver medal. German Lisa Kwayie won Bronze medal She has become the first Indian woman track and field athlete to win the coveted yellow metal at the event.  She is only the second Indian sprinter to win a Gold in a global event.

Indias first elephant rehabilitation centre will be set up at Keralas Kottoor

11 July 2019 Current Affairs: India’s first elephant rehabilitation centre will be set up by the Kerala State Government

It is in its ecotourism village of Kottoor.Rs.105 crore.

The project is launched by Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan. At present, the center has only 15 elephants.It will be increased once work has been completed.

The centre will have an elephant museum, mahout training centre, super-specialty hospital, a retirement home and crematorium for the animals, will house orphaned, injured and older elephants.

The centre spread over 65 hectares of natural forests start an elephant safari and other activities to attract tourists. The state has 507 captive elephants & forest department plans to admit more captive elephants. The Sree Krishna temple in Guruvayur town has 59 elephants.
