Chandrima Shaha to be the first woman president of INSA
12 August 2019 Current Affairs: Biologist Chandrima Shaha will become the first woman to head the Indian National Science Academy (INSA). She previously the vice-president of INSA and the director of the National Institute of Immunology in Delhi.
She will prioritize communicating science “aggressively” and combat pseudoscience. She and the elected council of 30 members will take charge on January 1, 2020. Shaha was cricketer and also worked as a commentator for All India Radio.Shaha’s research focused on understanding cell death pathways. Vice President book Listening, Learning and Leading released
Vice President Shri Venkaiah Naidu released a book titled “Listening, Learning and Leading” of his two years in office. The abrogation of Article 370 should not be considered as a political issue in the interest of the security of the nation and the future of people of Jammu and Kashmir. The Book “Listening, Learning and Leading” released by Union Minister of Home Affairs Shri Amit Shah. Vice President Shri Venkaiah Naidu received the first copy.
Shri Venkaiah Naidu inaugurates Mukhyamantri Krishi Ashirwad Yojana
12 August 2019 Current Affairs: Vice President Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated a scheme Mukhyamantri Krishi Ashirwad Yojana for the farmers having farmlands of less than 1 acre to 5 acres will be provided by Rs5,000-25,000. The launching ceremony was held in 23 districts apart from Ranchi. The benefit of the scheme is about 3000 crores will be sent to the account of 35 lakh farmers. The government has promised the farmers to double their income by 2020. As soon Mukhyamantri Krishi Ashirwad Yojana will launch and the amount will transfers to the beneficiary accounts.The state government will spend an amount of 2250 crores for increasing the income of farmers
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres calls for restraint over J&K issue
11 August 2019 Current Affairs: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on India and Pakistan to exercise “maximum restraint” and refrain from taking steps that could affect the status of Jammu and Kashmir as the 1972 Simla Agreement to sort out differences between the two countries.
The Secretary-General’s remarks came after India on Monday revoked Article 370 to withdraw special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the state into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Pakistan termed the Indian action as “unilateral and illegal”, and said it would take the matter to the UN Security Council.Pakistan sought UN intervention to put pressure on India, Guterres did not offer to mediate. He also urged the two countries to sort out their differences in accordance with the provisions of the 1972 Simla Agreement.The Secretary-General had no plans to brief the Security Council a practice followed when the situation in a particular instance is considered serious enough to warrant such a briefing.The Secretary-General has been following the situation in Jammu and Kashmir with concern and makes an appeal for maximum restraint,” Dujarric said, adding that there had been contacts from the UN Secretariat both with the Indian and Pakistani authorities and with the Permanent Missions of India and Pakistan.
World Archery suspended Archery Association of India
11 August 2019 Current Affairs: World Archery (WA) has suspended the Archery Association of India (AAI). Earlier, the WA executive board had given a July 31 deadline to both AAI factions to resolve their disputes, including parallel elections. The decision by WA to suspend AAI is because the matter is now in court.
The participation of Indian archers in international events under the National flag is jeopardised after AAI’s suspension. After the suspensionm, the last event in which Indian athletes can participate is the world youth championships in Madrid from August 19 to 25, 2019. WA is yet to decide whether individual athletes can participate in the Indoor Archery World Series.
Train ticket booking through IRCTC to get costlier
11 August 2019 Current Affairs: E-tickets bought through IRCTC will get more costly as the Indian Railways has decided to restore service fee charges. Almost three years they were withdrawn to promote digital payments a pet project of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government. The Railway Board gave its approval to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to restore the mechanism of charging service charge from passengers booking online tickets. The IRCTC, railways ticketing and tourism arm, had made a “detailed case” for the restoration of service charge on booking of e-ticket and the matter has been examined by the “competent authority”.The Finance Ministry contended that the scheme of waiving of service charges was a temporary one and that the railway ministry could begin charging e-tickets.
India first Corporate credit card for SMEs launched by B2B payments startup EnKash
EnKash launched the country’s first corporate credit card called ‘Freedom Card’ for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The Freedom Card is a true commercial credit card with open acceptance. Indian Army launches ‘Mission Reach Out’ in Jammu and Kashmir
The Indian Army launched “Mission Reach Out” in Jammu to ensure basic necessities and essential services are available in the region post the abrogation of the provisions of Article 370 and reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir. A high level “Mission Reach Out” conference to review the prevalent situation in the region. This was held in the Nagrota Military Station chaired by White Knight Corps Commander Lt Gen Paramjit Singh.
Reliance Jio Fibre launch on Sept 5 plans start at Rs 700 per month
12 August 2019 Current Affairs: Mukesh Ambani announced the roll-out of ‘Jio Fiber’ from September 5, promising free voice calls for life from landlines, 100 Mbps minimum broadband speed at subscription starting from Rs 700 a month and free HD TV set on a commitment to an annual plan. The 42nd Annual General Meeting (AGM), Reliance Industries’ Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani said Jio offer unlimited international calling pack from its landlines to the US and Canada at Rs 500 a month that default tariff plans will be one-fifth to one-tenth of existing market tariffs.Jio Fiber services would be available on a commercial basis from September 5.The average fixed-line download speed in the US which is the most developed economy is around 90 Mbps. India even the most basic Jio Fiber plan starts with 100 Mbps speed and we have plans all the way up to 1 Gbps or 1000 Mbps,” he said adding that this would improve the quality of fixed-line data in India.The plans will come at less than one-tenth of global rates, Ambani said Jio Fiber plans will be priced between Rs 700 to Rs 10,000 per month “to suit every budget”.The plans come bundled with subscriptions to most leading premium Over The Top (OTT) applications.Premium Jio Fiber customers will be able to watch movies in their living rooms the same day these movies are released in theatres.

The Odisha government released a Draft Agricultural Policy 2019 for the agriculture sector and to focus on increasing the income of farmers.
Main Aim: To strengthen the social as well as the economic well-being of the farmers, sharecroppers and landless laborers. The Proper use of resources and opportunities with advanced technologies available to contribute to the farmers’ wellbeing.There are about 50,000 single landless women in Odisha.
Indian Railways launches onboard shopping
11 August 2019 Current Affairs: Indian Railways introduced onboard shopping in train for passengers traveling in the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Karnavati Express. The services will start from Thursday and passengers can enjoy it on both the directions of the train.
This will give the opportunity to passengers to buy FMCG products of daily need while commuting. The Ministry of Railways tweeted about the new service.
The passengers can buy cosmetics, stationery and other items on some trains on MRP. Among others, household products, oral care, skincare, haircare products, cosmetics, health-related items, paper products, confectionery, stationery products and other will be available and sold as per their maximum retail price. Apart from the cash payment mode, passengers traveling in the train and buying goods can make payment through credit cards, debit cards, Google Pay and Paytm.The double-decker Karnavati Express travels from Ahmedabad to Mumbai Central and vice-versa.
Cricket Australia unveils new transgender inclusive policy
11 August 2019 Current Affairs: Cricket Australia announced a new transgender-inclusive policy. This policy will enable transgender players to play the game of cricket at the highest levels. The decision aligns in accordance with the International Cricket Council’s (ICC’s) gender recognition policy and gender diversity guidelines.
The policy sets out a limit for transgender and gender-diverse players who want to play for state and national women’s teams. Australian men’s national cricket team represents Australia in international cricket.It is oldest teams in Test cricket history playing in the first-ever Test match in 1877.
Huawei launches its own Operating System Harmony OS
12 August 2019 Current Affairs: Huawei Technologies launched its own Operating System (OS) named as HongMengOS in Chinese/ HarmonyOS in English. The first version of the OS launched later in 2019. It is a part of Huawei’s play in the Internet of Things (IoT).
It is used across different devices from smartphones to smart speakers and even sensors. The next three years, the OS will be used in other devices, including wearables and car head units.Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business group is needed to address future challenges in the era of internet of things, and it is hard to deliver a smooth experience across different devices with millions of lines of code. The most expected name of HongMeng, Huawei adopted Harmony for its in-house operating system to solve all these problems features of Harmony have already been used in its premium smartphone models and other devices.
