World Thalassaemia Day was observed on 8th May
09 May 2019 Current Affairs: 8th May is observed as World Thalassaemia Day globally every year. The theme for 2019 was Universal access to quality thalassaemia healthcare services: Building bridges with and for the patient.
The day is observed to raise awareness about thalassaemia, its prevention, and measures to avoid its transmission among people throughout the world. It is observed in honour of all patients suffering and fighting from thalassaemia and also all scientists working hard to provide improved quality of life to people suffering with it.
Bharti Airtel and Hughes India merged broadband satellite business
09 May 2019 Current Affairs: Bharti Airtel and Hughes Communication India have agreed to merge their broadband satellite or VSAT (very small aperture terminal) business to improve operational efficiencies and target new customers in areas such as in-flight connectivity
After a merger, Hughes Communication will own 67% share of new entity and the remaining 33% will own by Bharti Airtel.
The Hughes Communication 36% share of the market and Airtel Business, the enterprise and VSAT arm of Bharti Airtel, has 27% share of the market.
Death toll in Odisha dur to Cyclone Fani rose to forty one
09 May 2019 Current Affairs: The death toll in Odisha due to Cyclone Fani rose to 41. The rehabilitation is underway on a war footing in the affected districts. There has been massive damage to power infrastructure in the state particularly in the districts of Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, and Kendrapada. The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) reviewed the rescue and relief measures in the cyclone Fani affected areas in the State.
The state government informed that situation in eight out of a total of nine affected districts has improved.
About 3500 men are engaged in the restoration of power transmission lines, substations, etc. and more workers would also be arriving from West Bengal and Telangana. Landline telephone services in Puri have started functioning and BSNL and other Telecom Service Providers have also somewhat improved their mobile services. The state government, in coordination with the Centre, has prepared a detailed plan identifying priority areas for restoration of power and telecom facilities in Puri and Bhubaneswar.
EC ordered repolling in Tripura
The Election Commission on 8th May ordered re-polling in 168 booths of West Tripura parliamentary constituency. Tripura is the highest for any Lok Sabha constituency in the ongoing elections. The commission declared the voting held at these polling stations void based on reports submitted by the chief electoral officer, special observer and the returning officer. The re-polling is scheduled for May 12.
Esha and Akull won silver in the International Shooting Competition
09 May 2019 Current Affairs: India’s Esha Singh and Akull Kumar won silver in junior mixed air pistol event in the International Shooting Competition at Hannover, Germany. They secured 5.4 points and defeated by the German pair of Jan Luca Karstedt and Vanessa Seeger.
Esha shot 385 out of 400 in qualification, as compared to the 370 by Akull. It was the second mixed medal for Esha, after the one she won recently with Anmol Jain in Plzen, Czech Republic.
Aditya Malra qualified in the third place in junior men’s air pistol with a score of 568, but shot below par in the final and placed eighth.
Rakesh Sharma, Bajaj Auto Executive Director elected as IMMA Vice-President
09 May 2019 Current Affairs: Rakesh Sharma, Bajaj Auto Executive Director and also a representative of SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) elected as VP (Vice President) of IMMA, International Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (based in Geneva) during the annual general meeting of (IMMA) at Yogyakarta in Indonesia.
Rakesh Sharma has a wide range of experience in 2 and 3-wheeler industry and he is expected to efficiently direct IMMA towards being the trusted motorcycle manufacturers worldwide. IMMA’s president is Johannes Loman.
Genetic study was conducted on Lakshadweep island people for the first time
09 May 2019 Current Affairs: For the very first-time scientists carried out a genetic study on people of Lakshadweep Islands. It was conducted by a team of researchers at CSIR’s (Council of Scientific & Industrial Research) Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB). They studied the major islands of Kadmat, Andorth, Chetlat, Agatti, Kalpeni, Bitra, Kiltan, and Minicoy of Lakshadweep
Indias Jagjit Pavadia re-elected to the International Narcotics Control Board(INCB)
Jagjit Pavadia, an Indian re-elected by the UN Economic and Social Council to a five year term on International Narcotics Control Board with the highest number of votes of 44 in the 54 member council. She will begin her term on March 2, next year. She was elected to the INCB for her first five year term in 2014. She has also served as the First Vice-President of the Board in 2016 and Chair of the Standing Committee on Estimates in 2015 and 2017.
Sujatha V Kumar appointed as Head of Marketing for India and South Asia for Visa
09 May 2019 Current Affairs: Visa, the global leader in digital payments technology, announced the appointment of Sujatha V Kumar as Head of Marketing for India and South Asia.
Her roles will be as the overall marketing strategy and execution including consumer, retail and digital marketing initiatives for India and the emerging markets of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Maldives
Prior to this, she worked with Google as Head in Brand & Reputation, Marketing and Strategy. She has 20 years of experience and extensive knowledge of consumer insights, brand development, go-to-market approaches, category management, retail strategy and promotions.
She started her career at Procter & Gamble and later on gathered rich experience in sales and marketing across companies such as Gillette, Nokia, The Royal Bank of Scotland and Coca-Cola. Sujatha is a graduate in Psychology and holds an MBA in Marketing.
Tiger Woods was awarded the USs Presidential Medal of Freedom
US President Donald Trump awarded golfer Tiger Woods the US’s Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honour. The award described the 43-year-old as a true legend who transformed golf and then fought through years of injury to return to the sport’s summit. He was awarded after his fifth Masters’ title.
IIT Bombay researchers developed first indigenous microprocessor AJIT
09 May 2019 Current Affairs: Engineers from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) have developed a microprocessor called AJIT which could reduce the country’s dependence on imports. It is the first to be conceptualised, designed, developed and manufactured in India.
The project was funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and IIT Bombay. Powai Labs, a Mumbai-based company, has invested in the venture. It will own, market and support the product.
India’s electronics market is expected to reach $400 billion by 2020. Most of the electronic devices that are used are imported and only a quarter of the devices are produced in the country.
