Centre reconstitutes 8 Cabinet Committees

09 June 2019 Current Affairs: The Centre reconstituted eight Cabinet Committees including the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet, among others and Union Home Minister Amit Shah is part of all these committees.

The eight Cabinet Committees, PM Narendra Modi is part of six committees.

The members of Security Committee are PM Modi, Union Ministers Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, S Jaishankar and Rajnath Singh.

Appointments Committee of the Cabinet includes Modi and Shah, while Cabinet Committee on Accommodation Shah, Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Sitharaman and Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.

Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh and Minister of State (I/C) of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri will be special invitees to Cabinet Committee on Accommodation, according to a statement issued by the Centre.

They will be headed by Modi and includes Shah, Gadkari, Sitharaman, Goyal, Singh, Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers DV Sadananda Gowda, Minister of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Petroleum, Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Mrutyunjay Mohapatra is appointed as IMD Chief

09 June 2019 Current Affairs: Renowned scientist and cyclone warning specialist Mrutyunjay Mohapatra was appointed as the Chief of India Meteorological Department (IMD). His is popularly known as Cyclone man. He will take charge in the month of August.

Mohapatra and his team at the Cyclone Warning Division (CWD) of the IMD are noted for their accurate forecasts on cyclones which have enabled the authorities to ensure early evacuation of millions of people eventually saving many lives. In the past six years, the CWD has given accurate forecasts on cyclones including when Phailin in 2013), Hudhud cyclone in 2014 and Titli in 2018 that hit the eastern coast.

Reserve Bank of India permitted Banks to use Aadhaar only for DBT accounts for KYC requirements

Reserve Bank of India(RBl) permitted banks to accept Aadhaar number(Offline verification) for Know Your Customer(KYC) verification with the consent of the customers.

RBI has added the ‘Proof of possession of Aadhaar number’ to the list of Officially Valid Documents (OVD). This was notified by the RBI in its amended Master Direction on KYC. RBI’s Master Direction is a rule book that the regulated entities need to follow.

The bank should obtain the Aadhaar number from the customers who receive any benefit or subsidy under Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). For Non-DBT beneficiary customers, the Regulated Entities (REs) should obtain a certified copy of any OVD describing the details of customer’s identity and address along with 1 recent photograph.

Along with this, while submitting Aadhaar for Customer Due Diligence, the RES must redact or blackout the Aadhaar number as per Sub-rule 16 of Rule 9 of the amended Prevention of Money-Laundering(PML) Rules. All the non-individual customers should submit Permanent Account Number(PAN)/Form No 60 (for companies and Partnership firms – only PAN) along with other documents. Form 60 is submitted by an individual who do not have a Permanent Account Number (PAN).

Karnataka government has launched Pink Sarathi vehicles for womens safety

Karnataka government has launched ‘Pink Sarathi’ vehicles that are procured by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). It was launched by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. BMTC will use the vehicles to attend to the grievances of women passengers in city buses. BMTC had received Rs.56.07 crore from the Centre under the Nirbhaya scheme. It has also taken up various measures for the safety of women passengers, including the launch of Pink Sarathi vehicles.

 

The meeting of PM Modi and Imran Khan before SCO summit is not confirmed yet

09 June 2019 Current Affairs: The Ministry of External Affairs said that the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistan counterpart Imran Khan before the summit meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is not confirmed yet. The leaders of the two countries are scheduled to travel to Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic for the SCO summit of 13-14 June 2019.

The tension that was erupted after the terror attack at Pulwama and the Balakot counter-terror strike and the measures to de-escalate the tension is still ongoing.

ICICI Bank launches centre for MSMEs in Bengaluru

ICICI Bank launched a centre in Bengaluru to provide business solutions exclusively to start-ups and MSME sector. ICICI Bank along with Viral Rupani, Retail Business Head South, ICICI Bank inaugurated the centre. The services offered include working capital loans upto ₹20 crore, business loans (based on GST returns) upto ₹1 crore, instant overdraft facility of ₹15 lakh, extensive trade solutions and cash management services, among others.

Lt Gen PJS Pannu designated as Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (operation)

09 June 2019 Current Affairs: Lt Gen PJS Pannu take over as the Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Operations) from Air Marshal Rajeev Sachdeva on June 1.

He is currently posted as Deputy Chief Integrated Defence Staff (Doctrine Organisation and Training).

The General Officer is an alumnus of Indian Military Academy and was commissioned into 22nd Battalion, The Maratha Light Infantry (MLI) on December 13, 1980, and commanded the battalion from May 1999 to February 2001 in Uri Sector (Jammu and Kashmir) during Operation VIJAY. General Officer an instructor in the prestigious Indian Military Academy.

 

RBI scraped NEFT, RTGS transaction charges, banks to pass on benefits

09 June 2019 Current Affairs: The RBI removed transaction charges levied by it for Real Time Gross Settlement System (RTGS) and National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) systems to boost digital transactions.

The Real Time Gross Settlement System (RTGS) is meant for large-value instantaneous fund transfers while the National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) System is used for fund transfers up to Rs 2 lakh.

The State Bank of India (SBI) currently charges between Re 1 and Rs 5 for NEFT transactions and between Rs 5 and Rs 50 for RTGS.

Wipro Founder Azim Premji to retire as Executive Chairman by end of July

Azim Premji will retire as executive chairman of Wipro Limited upon the completion of his current term on July 30, 2019 but he would continue to serve on the board as non-executive director and founder chairman. His son, Rishad Premji, chief strategy officer and a board member, will take over as the executive chairman following his father’s retirement. CEO Abidali Neemuchwala has been appointed as MD.

Wipro to acquire US International TechneGroup for 312 crore

IT major Wipro it will acquire US-based International TechneGroup Incorporated for $45 million (around ₹312 crore). International TechneGroup Incorporated (ITI) provides Computer Aided Design and Product Lifecycle Management interoperability software services. Founded in 1983 and headquartered in Ohio, USA, ITI has offices in the UK, Italy, Israel and Germany.
