World Red Cross Day is observed on 08th May

World Red Cross Day (also known as Red Crescent Day) is observed every year on May 8.  The 2019 theme is, ‘#Love’.  The day is also the birthday of Henry Dunant, who had generated the Red Cross Committee of the International (ICRI) in 1863 in Switzerland, Geneva.  He was born in May 8, 1828 and was also the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize


Basava Jayanti 2019 was observed on 7th May

Basava Jayanti 2019 was observed on May 7, 2019. Basava Jayanthi is the birthday of Basavanna, a Hindu Kannada poet of the 12th century. Traditionally observed by the Lingayats, Basavanna who was also a philosopher is believed to be the founding saint of the Lingayat section.  Basava Jayanti 2019 will witness various celebratory events across states like Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. Basava Jayanti is a government holiday in Karnataka.

The 15th Finance Commission is to meet RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das

08 May 2019 Current Affairs: The 15th Finance Commission is to meet RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das and representatives of banks and financial institutions during its two-day visit to Mumbai beginning May 8, 2019.

The commission, chaired by N K Singh, will discuss issues concerning macro-economics, financial stability, cost of borrowing of the Centre and states with the RBI, market-driven borrowing cost and debt trajectories of states.

The commission will also discuss the issues concerning recapitalisation of banks, possible scenarios of the Bimal Jalan committee report on surplus capital available with the RBI for transfer to the government, RBI’s own assessment of the dividends and surpluses that can be transferred to the government.

The meeting is slated be attended by officials of State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Central Bank of India, Union Bank of India, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Yes Bank, IDFC First Bank, and IDBI Bank.

Indias MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) tourism growing at 8% a year

08 May 2019 Current Affairs: The report titled “India Inbound Tourism: Unlocking the Opportunity” published that India’s MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibition) tourism are growing at 8 per cent a year.

The report is published by the Federation of Indian Chambers & Industry (FICCI) in collaboration with Yes Bank.

India has ranked 24th in MICE tourism worldwide. Out of 12,563 international meetings held in 2018, India hosts only 175 meetings which are around 1.4% and MICE tourism was pegged at Rs 25,000 with a yearly growth of 8%. In India ranked 5th in the Asia Pacific region in MICE tourism at 2018. The top four countries were Japan followed by China, South Korea and Australia.

RBI to enhance housing loan limits under priority sector lending for RRBs and SFBs

08 May 2019 Current Affairs: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to enhance the housing loan limits for Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) and Small Finance Banks (SFBs) for eligibility under priority sector lending, in a bid to give them a level playing field with other Scheduled Commercial Banks.

RBI said that the existing family income limit of Rs.2 lakh per annum, prescribed in the master direction for RRBs and the compendium for SFBs, eligible for loans to housing projects exclusively for the purpose of construction of houses for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Low-Income Groups (LIG), has been revised to Rs.3 lakh per annum for EWS and Rs.6 lakh per annum for LIG.

Housing loans to individuals up to Rs.35 lakh in metropolitan centres and Rs.25 lakh in other centres will be eligible for classification under Priority Sector Lending. This is in alignment with the income criteria specified under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.


India was re elected as an observer to the 11th Arctic Council ministerial meeting

08 May 2019 Current Affairs: India was re-elected as an observer to intergovernmental forum Arctic Council at the 11th Arctic Council ministerial meeting held at Rovaniemi in Finland. India promised its commitment towards contributing more to the Arctic Council. The Council also appointed the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) as a new Observer.

India’s Observer status:India successfully got the Observer status in 2013 during the Kiruna Ministerial meeting held in Sweden.

India has its Arctic research station ‘Himadri’ in Svalbard, Norway since 2008. Located at the International Arctic Research base, the research station was set up by India’s National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research, an institute under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

Purple Frog to be named as Keralas state amphibian

08 May 2019 Current Affairs: Purple Frog is to be named as Kerala’s state amphibian. The species is endemic to the Western Ghats. The title would help in protecting species fragile habitat. The proposal for was mooted by Kerala’s leading Herpetologists, a specialist in the study of reptiles and amphibians.

It is believed that the species should be rightly called a living fossil as it’s evolutionary roots suggest it could have shared space with dinosaurs going back almost 70 million years ago.

GRIHA Council Launched GRIHA for Existing Day Schools, a rating system for evaluating existing schools in India

08 May 2019 Current Affairs: GRIHA Council launched “GRIHA for Existing Day Schools” in India, to comply with the nation’s vision for a greener and sustainable future.

“GRIHA for Existing Day Schools” is a rating device that would be able to assess the environmental performance of the existing schools in India. The integrated rating system also acquaints the school students with the concepts of ‘sustainability’ and ‘greenery’ by involving them in accessing the environmental impact of schools on the environment as a whole. The students would do evaluation under the guidance of their teachers.

The product-launch event had taken place at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. Mr Dinesh Kumar, Head, Department of Education in Science and Mathematics, National Council of Educational Research and Training, and other dignitaries were present at during the launch.

Laurentino Cortizo has been elected as the President of Panama

08 May 2019 Current Affairs: Panama’s Electoral Court declared Laurentino Cortizo as the winner of Panama’s presidential election. He will replace Juan Carlos Varela. Mr.Cortizo finished 2% points ahead of Romulo Roux.

Cortizo is a candidate for Panama’s Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD). The party won 33% of 95% of votes counted. The PRD was founded in 1979 by military ruler Omar Torrijos and has been out of power since 2009.


Mastercard Announced $1 Billion Investment In India

08 May 2019 Current Affairs: Global card payments brand Mastercard announced its plan of investing $1 billion in India operations over the period of next 5 years.

About $350 million of the total amount would be invested in setting up a local payments processing center as per the Reserve Bank of India’s mandate to store all payments data locally.The rest of the investment will go towards existing services and expanding capacity among others.

Microsoft released its own Blockchainbased Service

08 May 2019 Current Affairs: Microsoft released its own fully managed Azure Blockchain Service.

This will help in simplifying the formation, management and governance of the businesses so that they can pay attention to workflow logic and application development. Businesses can develop their applications on this new cloud-based platform.

“Quorum”, an enterprise-focused version of open-sourced platform Ethereum, will be the first ledger available in Azure Blockchain Service. This has been announced after a partnership between J.P Morgan and Microsoft.

India and Bangladesh agreed to jointly produce film on the life of Mujibur Rahman

08 May 2019 Current Affairs: India and Bangladesh agreed to jointly produce the film based on the life and works of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and documentary of Bangladesh Liberation War 1971.

The delegation from Bangladesh side led by Dr. Gowher Rizvi, Adviser to Prime Minister of Bangladesh met Amit Khare, Secretary of Information and Broadcasting Ministry.  The co-production of film was earlier announced by the PM of both India and Bangladesh

The movie will be directed by Shyam Benegal and the scriptwriter of the movie will be Atul Tiwari and the director of the documentary will be from Bangladesh who would be assisted by a co-director from India. Additionally, Prasar Bharti decided to carry Bangladesh TV on DD Free Dish platform and also to waive carriage fees.
