ISRO to launch RISAT 2BR1 by the end of May

06 May 2019 Current Affairs: The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) announced its plans to launch its latest radar imaging reconnaissance satellite’RISAT 2BR1′ towards the end of May 2019. Its launch was earlier scheduled in 2020.

The RISAT (radar imaging satellite), will be carried by PSLV-C46. It is one of the reusable variants of ISRO’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket, which has offered significant progress and technology sophistication in terms of advancement in space technologies. The designation C-46′ is as per ISRO’s numbering system. It would depart from the first launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.


PC Chandra Puraskaar 2019 conferred to Padma Bhushan Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty

06 May 2019 Current Affairs: India’s most reputed cardiac surgeon and humanitarian, Dr Devi Prasad Shetty were awarded 27th P.C. Chandra Puraskaar the annual national award from the P.C. Chandra Group at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre.

General Secretary of Ramakrishna Mission, Belur math, Swami Suviranandaji Maharaj graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and gave away the award. He is also known as  ‘The Man with Divine Hands’.

Vodafone Idea signed multi million dollar IT deal with the tech giant IBM

06 May 2019 Current Affairs: Vodafone Idea Ltd, India’s largest telecom operator, on 3rd May announced a five-year multi-million-dollar IT outsourcing deal with tech giant IBM. This engagement will also contribute to Vodafone Idea’s merger synergy objectives by reducing its IT-related costs.

The company did not divulge the size of the deal but some reports pegged it at about $700 million.

The collaboration will provide Vodafone Idea with a hybrid cloud-based digital platform to enable more intimate engagement with its over 387 million subscribers (as of 31 December 2018), enhancing business efficiency, agility, and scale plus simplification of its business processes.

The new infrastructure platform will remove constraints to an exponential growth of data usage driven by increasing consumption of video, streaming and digital commerce, the statement said, adding that it will also drive enhanced customer experience to millions of connected consumers and businesses in India.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn was crowned as the Thai King

06 May 2019 Current Affairs: King Maha Vajiralongkorn was crowned as the Thai King. The three-day coronation, which started on 4th May, is the first since Vajiralongkorn’s adored and revered father was crowned in 1950. He was carried by soldiers on a gilded palanquin through the streets of Bangkok 5th May, in front of crowds who craned to witness the historic event.

The King, Rama X of the Chakri dynasty, wore a bejewelled robe and broad-brimmed hat with a feather on the second of three days of pageantry and royal splendour. The seven-km procession brings the public into close proximity with the monarch for the first time, two years after he ascended the throne in an increasingly assertive reign.

It started at around 5 p.m. (1000 GMT) at the grand palace in Bangkok’s old quarter as trumpets blared, soldiers shouted commands and cannons fired a 21-gun salute. Early on 5th May, the king bestowed royal titles on family members who crawled to his throne in a striking show of deference to the monarch, who was joined by his new Queen Suthida.

Bandana sets Guinness World Records on Longest Dancing Marathon by an Individual

06 May 2019 Current Affairs: An 18-year old girl from Nepal named Bandana set a Guinness World Records on ‘Longest Dancing Marathon by an Individual’. She danced exclusively to Nepalese music continuously for 126 hours (over five days).

She broke the record set by India’s Kalamandalam Hemlatha, who danced continuously for 123 hours and 15 minutes in 2011. She performed classical dance form Mohiniyattam and set the record at age of 37.

Japan first privately developed rocket Momo-3 reached outer space

06 May 2019 Current Affairs: A Japanese aerospace startup Interstellar Technology Inc. successfully launched a first privately developed rocket ‘Momo-3’ into space.

The unmanned rocket launched from its test site in Taiki on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido and it reached about 110 km in altitude before falling into the Pacific Ocean after 10 minutes of flight time. The rocket is 10 meters in length, 50 centimeters in diameter and weighs about 1 ton. ‘Momo-3’ rocket has the capability of putting payloads into the orbit. The company Interstellar Technology Inc. founded by former Livedoor Co. President Takafumi Horie in 2013.


Myntra appoints Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma as first brand ambassadors

06 May 2019 Current Affairs: Flipkart-owned fashion e-commerce platform Myntra appointed Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma as its first ever official brand ambassadors.

Myntra launched an integrated campaign called ‘Go Myntra-lala’ to promote the brand. Advertising agency McCann Worldgroup from Bengaluru has created the television campaign. Anushka Sharma is a Bollywood actress and Virat Kohli is a famous cricket player. The couple has worked as brand ambassadors together for brands including Head and Shoulders and Manyavar.

US to hike tariffs on USD 200 bn of Chinese goods

06 May 2019 Current Affairs: President Donald Trump announced on 5th May that the U.S. would raise tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods to 25% from 10th May because trade talks are moving too slowly, as they attempt to renegotiate. Mr.Trump’s action came ahead of the arrival of a major Chinese delegation to Washington for the latest round of talks around, it is believed, could possibly lead to a deal.

For 10 months, China has been paying Tariffs to the USA of 25% on 50 Billion Dollars of High Tech, and 10% on 200 Billion Dollars of other goods. 10% will go up to 25%. The two sides have imposed tariffs on $360 billion in two-way trade since 2018. But Mr.Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping agreed to a truce in December to refrain from further escalation.

Besides a greater opening of the Chinese market to US goods, Trump is pressing for structural changes such as Beijing ending its practice of forcing US companies that operate in China to share their technology. Trump is also demanding that China halt theft of intellectual property and subsidies to state-owned companies.

India to attend Group of 7 industrialized nations meet

06 May 2019 Current Affairs: The Group of 7 (G7) industrialised nations meet is to organized by France in Biarritz in August 2019.  As India has been invited by France, India will be attending the meet along with Australia, Chile, and South Africa, in a sign of the recognition of India’s growing economic heft in the international arena. The invitation by France clearly reflects the strong strategic connect between India and France.

The G-7 groups constitute of the US, Britain, France, Italy, Canada, Japan, and Germany.

The French invite to India is not the first time India will be at this G-7 global high table. Then prime minister Manmohan Singh had attended the G-8 +5 meet in Gleneagles in Scotland in 2005 at the invitation of then British prime minister Tony Blair.


ADB (Asian Development Bank) launched $5 Billion Healthy Oceans Action Plan at its 52nd Annual Meeting

6 May 2019 Current Affairs: Asian Development Bank (ADB) launched 5$ billion Action Plan for Healthy Oceans and Sustainable Blue Economies for the Asia and Pacific region.

Main Aim: To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), inclusive of the SDG 14: Life Below Water.

Among 10 rivers only 8 that transports 88% to 95% of plastics into the sea globally, 8 are in Asia and Pacific region.
