NITI Aayog approves JV to acquire minerals needed for Electric Vehicles
04 August 2019 Current Affairs: NITI Aayog has approved the proposal for joint venture between National Aluminium Company (Nalco), Hindustan Copper (HCL) and Mineral Exploration Corporation Ltd. and foreign companies. The plan is to acquire foreign reserves of strategic minerals like lithium and cobalt to power the country’s electric vehicles has moved a step closer. Therefore, the three state-owned metal and mining companies are set to form a joint venture to buy on minerals.
KABIL Set up to Ensure Supply of Critical Minerals
04 August 2019 Current Affairs: Khanij Bidesh India Ltd. (KABIL) planned to set up with the participation of three Central Public Sector Enterprises namely, National Aluminium Company Ltd.(NALCO),Hindustan Copper Ltd.(HCL) and Mineral Exploration Company Ltd. (MECL).
Minister of Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affairs Shri Pralhad Joshi the objective of constituting KABIL is to ensure a consistent supply of critical and strategic minerals to Indian domestic market.
They would ensure mineral security of the Nation, it would also help in realizing the overall objective of import substitution.
World Bank data survey says India stands seventh position in the global GDP rankings
04 August 2019 Current Affairs: According to World Bank data survey, India slipped to the 7th position in the global GDP rankings in 2018. It stands marginally behind UK and France. Economists suggested that the reason for the fall in GDP is due to currency fluctuations and a slowdown in economic growth.
US officially withdraws from INF treaty
The US has officially withdrawn from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) treaty with Russia. The withdrawal has ended a Cold war-era missile treaty with Russia. This could start an arms race between the US and Russia, the world’s top two nuclear powers. Reason: The US accused Russia of violating the INF treaty’s agreement in recent years. The withdrawal announcement was made by the US President Donald Trump.
CRISIL cuts India s GDP growth to for FY on weak monsoon rains muted corporate results
03 August 2019 Current Affairs: Credit rating agency CRISIL lowered Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecast for India by 20 basis points to 6.9 percent for this fiscal citing weak monsoon and slowing global growth.
The GDP data for the first quarter taken into account for powering India’s growth estimates. The development came days after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) cut India’s growth by 30 basis points for the calendar years 2019 and 2020 to 7 per cent and 7.2 per cent respectively.
The global analytical firm, in its latest report on the outlook for India in the financial year 2019 titled ‘Uphill trek’, the slowdown would be pronounced in the first half.
The agricultural terms of trade are also expected to improve with a pick-up in food inflation, adding that farmers would benefit from income transfer of Rs 6,000 per year announced by the Centre.

Mindtree appoints Cognizants Debashis Chatterjee as new CEO
Mindtree appointed S.N. Subrahmanyan as its non-executive vice-chairman. Subrahmanyan currently serves as L&T group’s managing director and CEO. Chatterjee Cognizant’s global leader for digital systems and technology practice will be the first person outside Mindtree’s seven-member founding team to be appointed as the chief executive officer. He is the third person to take up the top job since the company launched 20 years ago.He is appointed till 1 August 2024.
Indian journalist Ravish Kumar was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award
03 August 2019 Current Affairs: NDTV journalist Ravish Kumar was awarded the 2019 Ramon Magsaysay Award. The award recognizes the greatness of spirit and transformative leadership in Asia. It is the highest honour given to Asian individuals and organisations. The award is often referred to as the Asian version of the Nobel Prize.
Ravish Kumar was honoured for his dedicated commitment to a professional, ethical journalism of the highest standard. It also recognised his moral courage in standing up for truth, integrity, and independence.
GST collection surpasses the Rs lakh crore mark in July
GST collection in July surpassed the Rs.1 lakh crore mark after a slump in the June month. Centre’s data reported that the total disposal under Goods and Services Tax (GST) was reported to be Rs.1.02 lakh crore in July 2019. Growth in GST collection: In July, the GST collection in a year-on-year growth of 5.8% over the revenue of Rs.96,483 crore was reported. The Central government collected Rs.17,912 crore and the States collected Rs.25,008 crore.
RBI allows Bank of China to offer regular banking services in India
03 August 2019 Current Affairs: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) allowed Bank of China to offer regular banking services in the country. Commercial banks, like SBI, HDFC Bank, Punjab National Bank and ICICI Bank, are in the Second Schedule.
Banks falling under this schedule have to adhere to the norms of the RBI.The Bank of China Limited included in the Second Schedule to the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.The RBI told Jana Small Finance Bank Limited included in the Second Schedule.The Royal Bank of Scotland plc’ changed to ‘NatWest Markets Plc’ in the Second Schedule.National Australia Bank’ ceased to be a banking company within the meaning of the Banking Regulation Act excluded from the Second Schedule.
One Nation One Ration Card scheme launched in States
03 August 2019 Current Affairs: Government has launched the One Nation-One Ration Card scheme in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. The scheme aims to boost to national food security. Each beneficiary would be given 5kg rice at ₹3 a kg and wheat at ₹2 a kg.
The Centre has formed the State Apex Committee under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary of the State and the State Project e-Mission Team.
ICMR introduces new TB vaccines VPM and Immuvac
04 August 2019 Current Affairs: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) launched a trial for two new TB vaccines. This is India’s first large-scale trial. This is a large preventive TB vaccine trial. The initiative involves more than 12,000 healthy household contacts of newly diagnosed TB patients from across six states of India are set to be enrolled.
Two thousand participants from each of the six states including Delhi, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana and Karnataka will enroll over the next seven to eight months. Also, seven main centres will have six sub-sites, where these trials will be conducted.
Bhasha Mukherjee was crowned MISS ENGLAND
Bhasha Mukherjee, an Indian-origin doctor, has been crowned MISS ENGLAND in Miss England competition in London. The event was held from 31 July to 1 August. The winners bagged over GBP 30,000 worth of prizes, which include a luxury holiday to Mauritius. Alisha Cowie was crowned MISS ENGLAND 2018. Bhasha Mukherjee is a indian Haryana origin girl about 23 year old from Derby. She holds two different medical degrees. She is fluent in five languages.
